Night Lights + The Golden Rule for Blue Eyes - Class of 2015 Sr Model Kaileigh - Butte MT Photographers

Looking gorgeous while also blowing sequence in just the right way,

butte mt photographers

at just the right angle,

without your cheeks looking like chipmunks,

while looking at the camera and trying NOT to bust out laughing because this is just so ridiculous,

well,

it isn’t an easy thing!

But somehow Kaileigh managed to do just that.

And then after at least 10 times blowing the sequence,

I made her clean it up.

senior pictures butte mt

Just kidding...do you really think I would do that?

My Golden Rule:

When in doubt - add more gold to glam it up.

Golden hair, golden necklace, golden background, golden glittery sequence.

Think we like gold much?

Plus - gold is the perfect color to make blue eyes pop.

You know those makeup sets you can buy for certain eye colors? Well, for blue eys, they almost ALWAYS include some sort of shade of gold. Sometimes it’s pink with a gold tint (rose gold) and a darker brown/gold for the darker accent. But gold is a part of the key.

So Kaileigh’s blue eyes + red lip color = some serious pop to all of that gold!

What about that outfit?

Kaileigh walked into the studio with an outfit from Mirror Mirror I could have died over!

senior pictures butte mt

The patterned clothing + patterned necklace were offset beautifully with the single-color red tank underneath, and Tasha Hall-Rich designed the makeup with a red lip to go with the color scheme of that tank.

Think about it - what if she had a peach lip?

Or a light pink lip?

You just wouldn’t have the entire outfit, makeup and background all mix together and create a palette of colors that works in unison.

Oh, and did we mention GOLD?

I thought, why not add even more gold with corrugated gold backdrop and just go all out?

The Kinda Heels that End in Road Rash - Introducing Kirsten Petritz - Classic with a Twist

butte montana photographers

She strolled into the studio from makeup in nude heels -

the kind of heels I can already imagine myself in.

Only in my version it ends with a rock,

road rash and the emergency room.

She looked like she stepped off a 1950’s movie set and was headed to the Oscar’s.

Hair shoulder length with big barrel curls,

makeup simple with a red lip,

wearing a black romper.

butte mt photographers

This timeless look deserved nothing less than a classic color palette of black, red and silver,

yet contemporary look of corrugated metal and leather couch of that complimented her bold lip and weaved top.

The lighting a soft version of the classic portraits you see of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn using the traditional Hollywood paramount lighting with hot lights,

yet contrasty enough to contour her cheekbones, bring out her dimples, and draw you into her eyes.

“I like classic,” she said,

after I complimented her on her ability to pull it all together into a fashionable look complete with wardrobe from Mirror Mirror, makeup choice with Tasha Hall-Rich, hair styling and shoes.

I’m pretty much stoked to see what she brings for her senior portraits.

butte mt senior pictures

Will she stick with her signature classic look with a contemporary twist for most of her outfits, or come up with some other sort of new concept that will blow my mind?

What ever it is she's having? I'll take 3! - Introducing 2016 Senior Model Shawnee Hjelt

Vibrant. SPONTANEOUS. Natural.

Shawnee is one of those girls.

butte montana photographers

A girl that when you meet her for the first time,

you’re energized,

abruptly optimistic,

and are just kinda like,

“who is that girl!”

She’s the kind of person with charisma and grace,

that you start opening your normally censored mouth,

saying things you don’t normally say to people you just met.

Maybe it’s her authentic smile,

montana senior pictures

Her energy with everything she says,

Her confidence in wearing red lipstick and a red hat (because God knows, I could never pull that off),

Or maybe it’s her poise and reaction of warmth that greats everything you ask of her,

from laughable directions of twirling like a 3-year-old,

to gazing out a salvaged window

like she’s waiting for a modern-day ken doll (could you imagine the muscles on that beef cake if he were real? Minus the scrawny chicken legs, of course.).

butte mt senior photographer

But one thing’s for sure:

Shawnee’s just one of those girls.

And whatever it is she’s having?

I’ll take 3.

The door to nowhere + ONE crazy unusual talent - Introducing Rylee Rawson!

The sharp,

gloomy staircase,

butte mt photographers

was lit up only by the single dangling tungsten bulb from the room next to it.

At the bottom a century-old wood door barricaded the way to a once booming Butte storefront.

Open the door and it leads to nowhere,

the other side of the door now closed off when the downstairs storefront entrances were filled in.

The feet that shuffled in and out of this door when Butte was booming must have been in the thousands, tens or even hundreds of thousands.

And now this isolated door is left abandoned, with nobody to walk through.

senior pictures montana

Rylee and her outfit from Mirror Mirror worked perfectly here. The yellows and blues complimenting the shades of browns and creams in the door.

The hot, tangerine lights casting sharp shadows - chiseling Rylee’s cheekbones and lighting up her eyes. Lighting like the drama of the days past - if only this door could talk.

montana senior pictures

But doors can’t talk.

I, on the other-hand, can.

Best of the BEST - Senior Models 2016! Butte Montana photographers

The peeling wallpaper was intricate with swirls, lines and embossing.

A sheen triggers its color and iridescence when seen from the right angle - jumping out from the dusty wall.

The trim with not a single power outlet - just a lone light bulb dangles from the ceiling.

A flashlight and gem from the craft store create an eery pattern on the wall.

The room? The old bedroom of baby seller Gertrude Pitkanen Van Orden in the basement of my studio. Her office was in the building next door, and her story was just told in a recent New York Times article.

These juniors were up for ANYTHING, be it exploring musty & dark rooms, pelting me with sequence, spinning around the room like they were a 3-year old in a flower field, or other random ridiculousness I expected of them to do while I photographed them!

We spent the entire arctic April day in the studio out of the brutal wind and worked every angle of the studio, basement below the studio, hallway outside the studio, and came up with something that looks like we spent the entire day going from building to building!

All clothing from Mirror Mirror.

Modern Day Cleopatra - Senior Model Themed Session

If I could scream out loud -

to reflect how absolutely PERFECT Miranda's eyes + lip color matched with this head piece,

I would...Well, I guess I could, but sitting in a Starbucks sipping my decaf iced mocha (no whip please) and belting out a scream might be frowned upon.

Here's just a sneak of what is to come.

I'll tell yah - in a few of them, she looks like she's about to behead me. That from a girl who probably doesn't even know how to make a mean face!
